Schools-to-Schools Charity Hike

Yavanna Verkest is someone that we can all look up to. At just 7 years of age, this Renaissance College student, with the help of her two friends Nandi Mintjens (aged 7) and Vikas Meijer (aged 6), hiked up Sharp Peak on the 19th of June 2010 to raise money for the Schools-to-Schools Charity (which supports education in Aceh, Cambodia, Myanmar and Timor). And she plans on doing it again with a new challenge!

19th June Hike up Sharp Peak for Charity

These extraordinary Year 2 students trained with their Families, learning how to navigate the terrain using a map, compass and landmarks. On the day of the hike the 3 students navigated alone (with support ahead and behind if needed). In their efforts, they raised HK$10,000 on their 12km hike reaching a maximum height of  468 meters.

On the 7th of November 2010,  Yavanna Verkest  and three of her friends (Latifah Marafa, Nandi Mintjens & Beatrice Sung) plan to undertake another hike along Lantau Trail Stage 3 from the Big Buddha to Lantau Peak and down to Tung Chung Road. Lantau Peak is the second highest peak in Hong Kong at 934 meters. The total length of this hiking trail is about 5.5km with a maximum ascent of about 500 meters.

Yavanna's new target set for the 7th of November 2010!

Donations can be made by cheque to Renaissance College and sent to the attention of Nick Cotton, Renaissance College, Ma On Shan. Your support is paramount in Yavanna’s effort to raise money for the Schools-to-Schools Charity. With the help of Hiking Hong Kong, we plan on blowing her last efforts out of the water!

This will be Yavanna's view once she reaches the top of Lantau Peak!

Please note that all donations are tax deductible; just ask for a receipt!
