HONG KONG 3 September, 2012 -Thousands of protesters calling for national education to be withdrawn rallied outside the Hong Kong government headquarters at Tamar. Organisers put the number at about 8,000 while police estimated that about 6,500 were present.
The Civil Alliance Against National Education has demanded talks with the Chief Executive C Y Leung. But, the request has not been met at 7 pm.
The angry protesters then announced that 3 more people would join a group of hunger strikers outside government headquarters. One of the original hunger strikers was taken away on a stretcher after feeling unwell.
A spokesman for the alliance, Andrew Shum, said they also plan to begin a non-cooperation campaign, such as boycotting schools.
The Chief Secretary, Carrie Lam, has indicated that the government will not back down on the issue. Mrs Lam said the public should focus on how national education should be taught in schools. Opponents of national education want it halted, at least in its current form. The government says the subject is aimed at fostering a sense of belonging and pride in the nation. But critics fear it will amount to brainwashing.
