The Chief Secretary, Carrie Lam, responded by announcing that the government would set up a committee with broad representation to monitor the introduction and implementation of the programme in schools.

Many Hong kong parents have expressed fears that the classes would result in children being subjected to indoctrination, while one teachers’ union had described the plan as “political interference” from Beijing.

However, officials have denied the accusation and say the aim is to build pride and a sense of belonging in the nation. Those marching from Victoria Park included members of the group Scholarism, made up of secondary school students. They were followed by teachers and parents with their children.

Shouting slogans such as “stop brainwashing education”, the protesters demanded that the government drop plans for a trial launch of the subject in primary schools in September.

The Chief Executive C Y Leung says the government definitely has no intention to brain-wash students by introducing national education in schools.

He rejected allegations that the creation of the new subject was a “political task” imposed on the new government.
