HONG KONG – 19 August, 2012 : Protests have been held in Hong Kong after Japanese nationalists landed on one of the disputed Diaoyu islands (known as Senkaku in Japanese) this morning and raised Japanese flags, despite objections from China.
The Federation of Trade Unions said 1,000 people joined its march from Wan Chai to the Consulate-General of Japan in Central’s Exchange Square. Demonstrators chanted slogans opposing a plan by Tokyo to “nationalise” the disputed islands.
They burned a Japanese flag and chopped the heads off six dolls representing Japanese politicians, including Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.
The Chinese Government strongly opposes Japanese rightists’ landing on the Diaoyu Islands yesterday, and urges Japan to put an end to its actions that seek to undermine China’s territorial sovereignty, China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement yesterday.
