Hurricane Signal 10 in Hong Kong  (hkdigit-20120725-082936)

Typhoon Vicente (international designation: 1208, JTWC designation: 09W, PAGASA name: Ferdie) was a powerful typhoon which slam Hong Kong. It was the 8th named storm and third typhoon in the 2012 Pacific typhoon season.

HONG KONG – 21 July, 2012: The Hong Kong Observatory hoisted tropical cyclone warning No. 1 Standby signal at 15:40pm
on Saturday as Severe Tropical Storm Vicente approached the region.

Typhoon Vicente shuts down public transport (hkdigit-20120725-081226)

22 July, 2012 : The Observatory raised the tropical cyclone warning to a No. 3 strong wind signal at 5:20am.

23 July, 2012 : The storm approached Hong Kong, and the Observatory raised the No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal at 5:40pm. The storm intensified and moved closer to Hong Kong, prompting the Observatory to raise the signal to No. 9 Increasing Gale or Storm Signal at 11:20pm, and then to No. 10 Hurricane Signal at 12:45am (24 July, 2012). It was replaced by No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal at 3:35am.

24 July, 2012 : Typhoon Vicente downgraded to No. 3 at 10.10am and No. 1 Standby signal at 2:40 p.m as Vicente left Hong Kong further.

Typhoon Vicente knocked down trees (hkdigit-20120724-110735)

The Development Bureau received reports of seven flooding cases and 580 fallen trees. The Highways Department received 446 reports of fallen trees, and Leisure & Cultural Services Department received 7 such reports.

The Home Affairs Department opened 24 temporary shelters during the storm, and 268 people sought refuge at them.

The Hospital Authority said as at 9.30am, a total of 129 people, including 56 males and 73 females, aged 4 to 86, had sought medical treatment at the Accident & Emergency Departments at public hospitals. 72 of them were admitted.

The Airport Authority said 60 flights had been cancelled, 60 delayed and 16 diverted to other places between midnight and 8am.

During the past 67 years (1946 – 2012) after the World War II, there were 14 tropical cyclones that necessitated the issuance of the No. 10 Hurricane Signal in Hong Kong.
