HONG KONG : 16 August, 2012 – No. 3 Strong Wind Signal was issued at 1:40 p.m. HKT.
This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.
At 2 p.m., Typhoon Kai-tak was estimated to be about 370 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong (near 19.3 degrees north 115.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the coast of western Guangdong.
Winds were strengthening gradually in the past few hours. Although Kai-Tak is tracking westward, its future movement is still subject to changes. According to the present forecast track, the chance of issuing Gale or Storm Wind Signal, No. 8 during daytime is not high.
In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island and Tate’s Cairn were 50 and 48 kilometres per hour respectively.
