Typhoon Tembin – Number 1 storm signal issued

HONG KONG 24 August, 2012 22:40 HKT – Hong Kong Observatory has issued the standby storm signal Number One, as Typhoon Tembin edges closer to the territory.

Typhoon Tembin to move west slowly, before doubling back towards Taiwan under the influence of another storm system in the region, Severe Typhoon Bolaven.

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 11 p.m., Typhoon Tembin was estimated to be about 530 kilometres east of Hong Kong (near 22.4 degrees north 119.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move west or west-southwest at about 10 kilometres per hour across the southern part of the Taiwan Strait, edging closer to the south China coast.

During the past several hours, Typhoon Tembin tracked westward steadily and edged gradually closer to the south China coast. Although Tembin has somewhat weakened, it still maintains typhoon strength. According to the present forecast track, Tembin will maintain a distance from Hong Kong. Unless Tembin adopts a track closer to Hong Kong, the chance of general strong winds in Hong Kong is not high. However, the offshore winds are expected to strengthen later tomorrow (25 August) and there will be swells. The public should stay alert.

Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal

1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.
2. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory’s web site for information on the tropical cyclone.
3. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.
4. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.
